Question: I need a tough drought resistant hedge for a rental property which will be dense enough to deter dogs but not grow much taller than about 4 feet.

Answer: Pygmy caragana make a great small dense hedge. Once established they are drought resistant and tough. Unlike the more common hedge caragana they are easily trimmed to about 4’ and do not set large volumes of seed.

Question: We are planning to create a hedge of boxwood around our corner property. It will be maintained at a 3' height. I neeed to stop people from crossing out yard. What variety would you suggest?

Answer: Unfortunately, boxwood would not be the best candidate for what you are looking for. It is really not dependable enough for our zone to be practical as a hedge. A few possible substitutions would be pygmy caragana, emerald carousel barberry, cotoneaster, grefshiem spirea, and prairie joy roses to name a few.

Question: We are looking for a feature tree for a front yard with limited space. We are hoping to find something that will hang, bloom and not get over 6' tall! Not sure if there is such a thing.

Answer: It does exist! The Royal Beauty Crab sounds like it should fit the bill.

Question: I am looking for a lilac that reblooms throughout the summer. Does that exist?

Answer: Yes, it does. Try the new Bloomerang Lilac with fragrant purple flowers. It blooms in spring and again in mid-summer to frost. The Korean Little Leaf Lilac occassionally will also give a second set of blossoms.
